Reid Karris and Corey Lyons have played countless shows together and performed in various ensembles over the years, but have yet to do any work together simply as a duo. That changes with the pair’s fungi and space inspired new release from Career Planet, Myconautica.
During the pandemic, Karris has been recording performances on skatchboxes, springs, bowls, and prepared guitars, to be used for virtual duets with other artists. Lyons improvised over eight of these tracks, using an Elektron Digitone, aiming to anchor the pieces to drones and tiny noisescapes. One could even say the sounds mimic the cacophony of the forest set against the quiet hum of the nutrient exchanges occurring amongst the roots and mycelium below ground. Or perhaps, as the titles suggest, they inspire a fantastical image of retro-future fungal space explorers.
Career Planet eschews traditional album art in favor of cutting up unique artistic paper, making each copy unique. We’re going even further this time, and will be making the paper from scratch using homegrown Ganoderma sessile mushrooms for early orders. Commonly known as Reishi or Lingzhi fungus, it is one of the most visually striking and (allegedly) medicinally beneficial mushrooms. Very limited quantities of the mushroom-paper cassettes will be available.
Myconautica will be available on cassette and digitally on National Mushroom Day, October 15, 2022
