Rusty Bryant was one of the funkier saxophonists of the late 1960s/early '70s when electronic soul-jazz was at the height of its popularity. He was equally skilled on tenor and alto, also utilizing the Varitone sax on a couple of his albums during his peak years. An unsung monster in the pantheon of exceptional soul-jazz outings from the Prestige catalog, 1971's Fire Eater finds Bryant grooving hard in a combo that featured Wilbert Longmire on guitar, both Bill Mason and Leon Spencer Jr. on organ and Idris Muhammad on drums.
