I had been experimenting with making cassette and reel to reel tape loops during the months leading up to recording. At this point in my process I wasn't satisfied anymore with making tracks that repeated ad nauseam. I began layering several tape loops together into one composition which started to create more interesting possibilities.
To keep the repetition subtle I used tape loops as an initial cell to expand from. Using mixing techniques and effects as a way to continually vary the loops. The idea was to introduce new elements and evolving sounds throughout the length of a composition.
There are a few instances on the album where I played an instrument throughout the length of the piece. Though whenever possible I would record the idea down on a tape loop, preferring the happy accident and start and stop nature that comes with the looping process. This small element of chance allowed me to enjoy the creation of the tracks as a listener as well as a performer.
I decided to call the album 'Air Talk' after spending some time reading through and pondering Yoko Ono's book Grapefruit. I thought this particular phrase of hers was an apt title for this airy, noisy collection of nature field recordings. I imagine the sound of air talking to be a very subtle thing and something that could be easily missed altogether if someone isn't listening closely.
