New - Davi Music - On By - Cassette

A while back I had a random lunchroom conversation about Makaya McCraven's Universal Beings album. My coworker said it was McCraven's "Bitches Brew" and went on about how Universal Beings had been inspired by the Miles Davis record, particularly producer Teo Macero's post-session editing work.

I was really intrigued. I thought I knew Bitches Brew but I had no idea there were all these tape cuts everywhere and even some actual tape loops. All the starts and stops I assumed were part of the live sessions.

As I did some more reading I gradually got the idea to dig back into my vault of tape loops and put together an album based on edits and the sequencing of musical fragments, odds and ends.

The actual loops didn't exist in physical form any longer because of my habit of throwing out the tape and reusing the cassette shells over and over again with freshly spliced tape. Fortunately I had recorded lengthy mixes of all of the loops into my DAW.

And through the modern convenience and ease of digital editing I was able to audition a bunch of sequences, edits and crossfades of these very analog creations.

As a result, On By has a different kind of flow than any of my previous releases and I think feels more like a DJ set than an album.
