Dark/ethereal ambient side-projects from NYC resident Lexi Turner, well known for her harsh noise project PRAYER ROPE and as half of the dungeon synth duo AVOIDANCE, and Chicago’s own Daniel Burke, leader of the four-decades-going experimental powerhouse ILLUSION OF SAFETY. Lexi Turner’s ERLÖST is inspired by the pessimist philosophy of Philipp Mainländer, author of The Philosophy of Redemption. In line with their feeling of ephemerality, Turner’s tracks are recorded during nights of insomnia, and immediately deleted after completion. Thankfully, she let us have five brand new ones, just very recently recorded and completed for this split. Daniel Burke’s new solo project TWILIGHT FURNITURE fuses electronic and acoustic chamber music, cabaret lounge jazz, bedroom pop, minimalist composition and a smattering of dungeon synth vibes for the adventurers out there, channeling but not necessarily sounding like modern composers Michael Nyman, Scott Walker, Mark Hollis, Harold Budd, Eric Satie, Burt Bacharach and John Cage. Burke’s “Hazefilter” piece is a longform track incorporating many of the elements he likes playing with inn this mode: dark and evocative synth music (Serge & Eurorack), orchestral filmic instrumentation and hypnotic yet slightly disquieting shades of introspection, suggesting an oblique narrative. Skirting genre and playing with form, tonality, atonality, tradition and innovation, Burke opens space for experiential access.
