Recorded across Chicago at various home studios and even a cabin in Michigan, Dreaming In Sound has all the hallmarks of the DIY aesthetic, but with sonic fidelity that showcases technical prowess and musicality. Zagar collaborated with the acclaimed Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Califone) for production & mixing, Doug Malone for mixing, and Ben Allen (Animal Collective, Cut Copy) for mixing. The result is an accomplished blend of resonant textures and beautiful playing.

The classically trained Zagar plays guitar, violin, synthesizers, drum machines, Rhodes, piano, organ, bass, percussion, and vocals. He was joined in the studio by his brother Andy on drums, with appearances by fellow Chicago musicians Eli Wilson on saxophone and Josh Wentz on synthesizers and effects. Dreaming In Sound demonstrates Zagar’s dexterity with various (and at times contrasting) flavors, combining them into a singular thread.

Sputtering Juno-60 synths are intertwined with Zagar’s analog instrumentation, often building towards wondrous heights. Careful to avoid monotony, the record is awash with string passages, bleary vocals, hypnotic rhythms, punchy bass, and misty synths. Effects like warped tape speed and ripples of reverb accent each melody. The lyrics invite the listener’s own interpretation rather than tell you what they’re about. Still, Dreaming In Sound is a personal record. Zagar walks you through the last several years of his life, reflecting on love, family, imposter syndrome, and isolation. Even if the subject matter is introspective, these arrangements are as welcoming as they are impressive.
