Erstwhile druggie, drifter, storyteller, taxi-driver, recovering Pentecostal maverick from Pensacola, Florida. It’s the 20th anniversary of Jim White’s haunting outer space alt.country classic that has a title so long nobody can remember the name of it. Featuring Aimee Mann, M. Ward, Bill Frisell and the Barenaked Ladies—to name a few of the artists here—this album quickly rose to cult status. Pitchfork gave it an 8.1 and said, “White has enough guest musicians on this to populate any number of small towns.” They also said, “You won't hear another record like it this year, possibly ever. What all these disparate elements that White pulls together add up to is White's alone, a style with no real name, American as barbecue sauce on apple pie.”
Now it’s on vinyl for the first time, pressed on Substrate Black in a gatefold jacket. And because he wasn’t wordy enough the first time around, Jim’s added THREE EXTRA TRACKS.
